The Role

As a Learning Development Officer (LDO) in the NZ Army your skills and experience in teaching, adult education, training development or organisational development will be valued.

You will support the development of the New Zealand Defence Force and its people; both at home and on deployment on military operations, it is an exciting and challenging role.

Job On Camp

As a Learning Development officer you will provide specialist training and guidance on educational matters to NZDF commanders and units throughout the country. You will soon become a specialist in military training, education and professional development by providing support to the wider NZDF.

Responsibilities include:

  • Selection, testing and development of translators and interpreters on operations.
  • Providing literacy and numeracy support to personnel.
  • Preparing overseas military personnel for NZDF courses.
  • Conducting occupational and training needs analysis.
  • Design and development of training courses.
  • Management and evaluation of training.
  • The provision of guidance to NZDF project teams.
  • Maintain custody of NZDF instructional standards
  • They also manage the provision of base-level courses.
  • Provide personal development advice regarding education and training opportunities.
  • Presenting lessons.

With the NZDF increasing the complexity of the technology it uses in support of training and education you will have the opportunity to work with specialist personnel in the evaluation, design and implementation of training technology solutions.

You will be provided with leadership responsibilities and along with your core tasks, undertake a range of military activities; from weapon handling, to adventure training and the potential for operational deployments

Pay & Benefit Details

Your initial remuneration will be based on previous experience and skill level. This is negotiated on a case by case basis. As your career continues, remuneration will increase on promotion and seniority.

General Requirements

  • You must be at least 17 years of age.
  • Meet the citizenship & security requirements to gain SV security clearance for this trade.
  • You must be free of any criminal convictions.

Educational Requirements

  • You must be a trained teacher or;
  • Hold a degree (preferably in Adult Education or a related field such as Human Resource Development, Training and Development, Vocational Training, Organisational Psychology or Education) or;
  • Hold the equivalent of a level 5 Diploma in Adult Education and Training
  • You must have had proven practical experience.

Fitness Requirements

  • You must be medically fit for service.
  • Colour perception restrictions may apply.

Training

Basic Training

SPECIALIST OFFICER INDUCTION COURSE

Upon successful enlistment into the Army you will be posted to Waiouru Army base. Here you will do a six week specialist officer military training course to teach you the basics of being in the Army. The course is designed to assist you in your integration into the Army and although it is challenging, it’s specifically catered for specialist officers. You will be taught the basics including:

  •     Navigation
  •     Weapon handling
  •     Leadership
  •     Drill and barrack routine
  •     Living in the field
  •     Army Ethos and Values

Job Training

After successful completion of your Specialist Officer Induction Training course, you will be posted to one of the Junior Learning and Development Officer positions within the NZ Defence College.

Although the primary focus of the role is Training Development, Training Evaluation, Language Literacy and Numeracy support, or English Second Language teaching, there will be opportunities to undertake a range of other tasks. These will be designed to provide exposure to some of the other areas within the NZ Defence College and will also help with your integration into the camp or base to which you are posted.

You will attend a range of courses that will introduce you to the NZDF Systems Approach to Learning and the NZDF way of conducting business. In addition you will progress towards external qualifications in Adult Education, Adult Literacy and Numeracy, and English Second Language teaching. 

As an Army Officer you will also complete a number of core military training courses as part of your primary training.

Ongoing Training

Advanced Learning and Development Officer Training

After attaining experience on the job and when you have consolidated your primary training you will be nominated to attend some more advanced courses to gain higher level skills and knowledge in Training Development, Instructional Theory and Training Management. These courses will ensure that you have the in-depth professional knowledge needed for more senior appointments

Specialist Training

Command and Staff Courses

As you progress through your career you will attend two courses at the New Zealand Defence Force Command and Staff College at Trentham Military Camp (Wellington): a residential eight week Joint Junior Staff Course and an eight month Joint Command and Staff Course.

Both courses comprise a mixture of visiting lecturers, tutored discussion groups, visits and individual study to give you the skills you need for high-ranking appointments. If you’re a successful graduate of the Senior Staff Course, you can then choose to complete one further paper to gain a Masters degree in International Security.

Location Details

You may be employed in any of the Army, Air Force or Navy camps and bases throughout New Zealand. As you gain experience you will have the opportunity to travel overseas and be employed in a wide variety of Defence Force posts.
